Train To Pakistan

Author: Khushwant Singh

“Not forever does the bulbul sing
In balmy shades of bowers,
Not forever lasts the spring
Nor ever blossom the flowers.
Not forever reigneth joy,
Sets the sun on days of bliss,
Friendships not forever last,
They know not life, who know not this.”

Religion- a very common point in India that is used as a medium to provoke so many riots, violence, and social disturbances. India is called a nation with unity in diversity. A country which is called Secular because of the way different religions live in harmony. But then have you ever thought what made it like this that everyone is using religion to fulfill their Agenda, so much hate in the name of religion, so much misunderstanding in the name of religion. Aren’t we the country that worships in temples, bow their head in Mosque and have Langer in Gurudwara?

Have you also wondered like me why partition took place after Independence? Great leaders of All Religions fought together for the independence of our Nation- “Bharat”. Then why this Partition when we finally got independence, when we could have lived as a nation together in harmony?

According to my view, partition has not done anything good to the country. It had started a never-ending war between India & Pakistan. This never Ending War has taken life of so many soldiers, so many civilians and does not seem to end soon. Muslims were forced to leave the country to go to pakistan where they were treated as refugees. Same for Hindus and Sikhs who were forced to leave Pakistan to go to india are Refugees here. So many families lost their lives, so many lost their motherland, the homes they spent their whole life in. Who would have thought partition of the country would lead to this disaster.

Train to Pakistan by Kushwant Singh- a book based on the time of Partition. It recounts the Partition of India in August 1947 through the perspective of Mano Majra, a fictional border village. When the whole country was burning in the flame of partition, There was a village that was still living in peace with Hindus, muslim, and Sikhs all like a family. Which was untouched by the Partition violence. But one day a train stopped at the station and everything changed for the village. There was fear, uncertainty, Doubtfulness for each other. Muslims were forced to live their homes to go to refugee camps and to be sent to Pakistan through the train running from Amritsar to Lahore.

I could only imagine, how scary scenes would have been at those times, when trains coming to stations were full of dead bodies, not sparing a single life. Could you imagine how much hate it has raised with just one decision? The people who were like brothers to each other, now have uncertainty for each other. Muslims look at Hindus with hate and vice versa. But who suffered the most in this? We all know the answer right? Common people but those sitting at Delhi, who decided this without even analyzing the consequences, didn’t even suffered a bit.

It took me some time to finish the book, as it is just not a novel but a book that takes you to the partition Days. The author writes it so beautifully that you could picture every scene and that’s what makes a book worth reading. I would suggest to read this book atleast once, it would if not eradicate it would then decrease your hate for other religions, you would know the reason why our country called ” unity in diversity”. Because we are the country where “Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, all are brothers”.
